"The Story of Warfarin"

An animated "film noir" about how clover, cows and dead rats played their part in the discovery of the famous blood thinning drug.
Involvement: All visuals. (Treatment, visual storytelling, storyboard, artwork, animation, typography and compositing.)
This is still one of my favourites!
I loved playing with the light and dark and the film noir camera angles. The script was amazing to work with, and invited a bolder illustration style and a more cinematic approach in the storytelling than I can usually get away with for a science piece.
I chose the old photography style textures and palette to go back and forth between warm sepia tones and stark silvertone/monochrome (with red as the only spot colour) as we travel through the time periods and stages of discovery in the development of Warfarin as one of the oldest and most commonly used anticoagulants in humans today.
It’s still being watched and engaged with to date (on Nature’ Youtube Channel), and it won us some nice recognition too:
